What is a SIP (Systematic Investment Plan)?

A Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) lets you invest a fixed amount in a mutual fund at regular intervals – usually every month – instead of putting in a large lump sum. You can start a SIP with as little as ₹100–₹500 per month. Because you buy units at different prices over time, SIPs benefit from rupee cost averaging and the power of compounding, making them one of the most popular ways to build long-term wealth in India.

How does this SIP calculator work?

Enter your monthly investment, the expected annual rate of return and the number of years. The calculator instantly shows your total invested amount, estimated returns and the final maturity value. Turn on Step-Up to increase your SIP every year, and Inflation to see what your corpus would be worth in today's rupees.

SIP Calculation Formula

FV = P × [ ((1 + i)n − 1) / i ] × (1 + i)
  • FV – Future value (maturity amount)
  • P – Amount invested every month
  • i – Monthly rate of return = annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100
  • n – Total number of monthly instalments (years × 12)

Example

If you invest ₹10,000 per month for 15 years at an expected 12% annual return, you invest ₹18,00,000 in total and the estimated maturity value is about ₹50.46 lakh – of which nearly ₹32.46 lakh is wealth created by compounding.

Benefits of Investing Through SIP

  • Disciplined investing: Auto-debit builds a saving habit without timing the market.
  • Rupee cost averaging: You buy more units when prices are low and fewer when they are high.
  • Power of compounding: Returns earn returns – the longer you stay invested, the bigger the effect.
  • Low entry barrier: Start small and increase the amount as your income grows.
  • Flexibility: Pause, increase or stop a SIP anytime in most open-ended funds.

SIP vs Step-Up SIP: Why Increasing Your SIP Matters

A regular SIP keeps the same amount for the whole tenure. A step-up SIP raises the amount by a fixed percentage every year. Since salaries typically rise annually, a 10% yearly step-up can dramatically increase your final corpus without feeling heavy on your budget.

Scenario (₹10,000/month, 12%, 15 yrs)InvestedApprox. Maturity
Regular SIP₹18.0 lakh₹50.5 lakh
Step-up SIP @ 10% yearly₹31.8 lakh₹90.3 lakh

How to Choose the Right SIP Amount and Duration

  • Start with your goal: retirement, child's education, house down payment or an emergency fund each need a different target and timeline.
  • Invest 10–20% of income if possible, and raise it with every increment.
  • Stay long-term: equity SIPs work best over 7–10+ years.
  • Be realistic with returns: use 10–12% for equity funds and 6–8% for debt funds when planning.

SIP Taxation in India (Quick Overview)

Each SIP instalment is treated as a separate investment for tax purposes. Gains on equity funds are taxed as short-term or long-term capital gains depending on how long each instalment is held, while debt fund gains are taxed as per applicable rules. Tax rules change from time to time, so always verify the current rates on the official Income Tax Department website or with a tax professional.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is a SIP calculator?

A SIP calculator estimates the future value of your monthly Systematic Investment Plan based on the monthly amount, expected annual return and investment duration.

What is the formula to calculate SIP returns?

FV = P × [((1 + i)n − 1) / i] × (1 + i), where P is the monthly investment, i is the monthly return rate and n is the number of months.

What is a step-up SIP?

A step-up SIP increases your monthly SIP amount by a fixed percentage every year, so your investment grows along with your income and builds a much larger corpus.

What return can I expect from an equity SIP?

Equity funds have historically delivered roughly 10–14% CAGR over long periods (10+ years), but returns are not guaranteed. Use a conservative rate of 10–12% for planning.

Are SIP returns guaranteed?

No. SIPs invest in market-linked mutual funds, so returns are not guaranteed. The calculator only provides an estimate based on the constant rate you enter.

Is SIP better than lump sum investing?

SIP spreads your investment over time, reduces timing risk through rupee cost averaging and builds discipline. Lump sum can work when you have surplus cash and a long horizon, but it carries timing risk.
